Freedom Exhibition Trafficking in Persons Bill Celebration
Cape Town, South Africa – 5 August 2013
The Freedom Exhibition travelled to Cape Town during the month of August in collaboration with the organisation STOP. STOP, an organisation based in Stellenbosch; played an integral role in the passing of the Trafficking in Persons Bill this year. The opening night was utilised to thank parliamentarian members for their support and proactive work in passing the bill, as well as to honour community members for their support.
Corrine Sandenbergh the director and founder of the STOP organisation, was the main speaker for the event. She addressed the crowd in appreciation for their support in the parliamentarian undertaking of the country’s first ever human trafficking legislation. The bill referred to as the Trafficking in Persons Bill, provides for police training, victim protection; as well as legal sentences or fines issued for perpetrators of human trafficking. Ms. Sandenbergh also personally thanked the parliamentarians present, for their concern and support for the victims of trafficking and the Bill. She likewise called for the national support of trafficking victims, as well as for the community at large to support the infrastructure set up to protect the victims of human trafficking.
Marisa, curator of the Freedom Exhibition discussed her vision for the Freedom Exhibition and how the exhibition began. She informed the crowd that much of the funding raised through the selling of the exhibition artworks, is donated to the organisations and safe houses that nationally aid victims of human trafficking. Funds raised at the August event were donated to STOP in Stellenbosch.
Kaylene Levack, director of the Design Cradle added her voice to the evening through sharing information on human trafficking and how it affects South African communities and society as a whole. Carine Nel, local singer and board member of STOP delighted the crowd by reading a poetry piece featured in the Freedom Exhibition.
The evening culminated with the crowd gathering on the first floor to take in the solo exhibition entitled “Worth” by local artist Michelle-Lize Van Wyk. She discussed what it means to live in the Face of God and how that impacts our worth as human beings. She ended the discussion with a prayer for the South African nation anda biblical declaration for the nation based on the scripture found in Numbers chapter 6. Rounding off the evening was the delightfully entertaining and soul nourishing Touching and Healing African Band, whose music and singing was a highlight of the eventful evening.
Finally, the crowd who had gathered in Stellenbosch for the opening evening; were at liberty to reflect and take in the artworks along with the inspiration and information presented at the exhibition.
